The Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild (IATSE Local 706) is the official labor union for make-up artists and hair stylists in film, television, stage and digital media. These artistic professionals have created the iconic looks for Hollywood’s most memorable characters and stars, and have influenced major trends in the consumer industry. The Guild has a rich history.
All of our various classifications have different and specific entry requirements (please see How to Join Local 706). Membership in the Make-up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild is attained through hard work, perseverance and passion. There are no shortcuts, there are no apprenticeship programs or internships. The competition is very stiff, but membership is a goal worth achieving. Make-up artists and hair stylists must be on trend” with the most current red carpet looks, but also proficient with period” work, bald caps, facial hair, basic prosthetics and character work, basic barbering and wigs for both men and women. In film and television, I.E.R. Journeyman and Trainee Make-up Artists and Hair Stylists work specifically in their own craft; Hair Stylists must have and maintain a current cosmetology license.
We invite you to explore and enjoy our new website, peruse issues of our official magazine The Artisan and obtain all vital information pertaining to the Make-up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Awards. Only Local 706 members are permitted access to specifically union-only, password-protected areas within the site.

We are costumers. Tireless ninjas of the set. Continuity freaks. Detail geeks. Fabric nerds obsessed with creating the exact shade. Sleepless till every character’s perfectly dressed. We know the script backwards and forwards, researching periods on the fly. We pull, fit, pin, sew, create and shop till we drop. And if we can’t buy it, we build it.
We’re the unsung heroes behind the scenes – and the seams. We always come through, in the crunch, around the clock – turning actors and background players into queens and kings, hippies and warriors, rock stars and robbers. We are IATSE Local 705, better known as the Motion Picture Costumers. Doing our job with art, skill and panache for over 80 years.
